The Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a rating system that classifies hurricanes based on their maximum sustained wind speed, and rates their strength from 1 to 5.
This scale estimates potential property damage. It does not take into account storm surge, rainfall flooding etc.
Hurricanes reaching Category 3, and higher, are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and damage.
